  17. Once a program is transferred from the
  18. disk into the RAM  chips,  it is ready
  19. to be run.  The program's instructions
  20. are read by the CPU  and  carried out.
  21. Perhaps part of the  RAM  will be used
  22. for a  scratch  pad to hold data as it
  23. is  being  changed.  For  instance, if
  24. you are writing a letter with  a  word
  25. processing  program, that  letter will
  26. exist in the RAM.  If  the  power  was
  27. turned off, the letter  would  be lost
  28. unless you first copy it onto a disk.
